Charles Dickens Live!| ABOUT CHARLES DICKENS As a reader there is no doubt that CHARLES DICKENS owes much of his great success to the almost universal curiosity felt to the see the man, and the interest in him as an author. He has long had the name of being the finest amateur actor in England, and we feel sure it is his acting and power in presenting his own creation which is the great attraction. As has been well said: " What he lacks in art is more than compensated by the rich endowment of a sympathetic nature, capable of seizing and conveying an impressive manner the most delicate shades of pathos and humor, and insomuch capable of touching the popular heart." It is said that DICKENS'S eldest boy lives with his mother; while the other children live with their aunt, Georgine Hogarth (Mrs. Dickens's sister,) under their father's roof. The friends of both parties say that incompatibility of temperament was the sole cause of their separation, which had been earnestly advised long before it took place. DICKENS'S farewell readings in New York will begin Monday, April 13th and will continue but five night, viz.: 13th, 14th, 16th, 17th and 20th of April. We have seen it stated that Messrs. Ticknor & Fields pay him $100, 000 for his readings in this country and anything above that they make themselves, but we hardly believe it. |
