Charles Dickens Live!| ARRIVAL OF MR. DICKENS AND PARTY-THE READING THIS EVENING Mr. Dickens and party arrived here from Rochester at half-past three yesterday afternoon and took an apartment at the Tift House. The party consists of Mr. Charles Dickens Mr. George Dolby, of London, Mr. Dickens's General Agent; Mr. R. Kelly, Of London Mr. M.P. Wields, of Boston, Ticket Agent; Mr. George Allison, of London, Gas-fitter, and Mr. Dickens's servant. Mr. Dickens and Mr. Dolby attended the theatre last evening and occupied a private box. They were known by but very few, and consequently no demonstartion was made. They remained from about eight o'clock until the performance was nearly over. The work of preparing the stage-about which it seems Mr. Dickens is very particular-was completed this morning. The gas fixtures, which are carried along, were setup and everything minutely arranged. The stage where the reader stands is covered with is covered with a maroon colored material, and behind is a large screen of the same shade, while in front and overhead a gas pipe with a number of small-jets, runs across, whith a shade before them to throw the light upon the desk. The reading will commence at eight o'clock precisely and we have been solicited to repeat the request that the audience will be seated at least ten minutes before eight. It is desirable that ticket holders go as early as possible, in order to allow the ushers to seat them, which will be a matter of more than ordinary difficulty, as the chairs have necessarily been placed closer together than heretofore to accomplish the large number who will be present. We earnestly hope that those individuals who have a weakness for parading about the hall and showing themselves to the audience after an entertainment has commenced will refrain from doing so tonight and tomorrow night. They will confer a great favor upon the sensible people in attendence. We understand that sixty more seats were placed in the hall this morning and that the tickets for these will be sold at the box-office this evening at two dollars each. |
