Charles Dickens Live!
Charles Dickens Buffalo Press Coverage

Mr. Dickens' visit to Buffalo in March of 1868 as part of his American Reading Tour was HUGE news!  Bad weather and Mr. Dickens ill health caused him to cancel parts of his tour. Buffalo remained on his itinerary because he had his heart set on seeing Niagara Falls-which he did right after his appearances in the "Queen City".
According to the US Census Bureau, the population of Buffalo was just over 100,000 people in 1868. It was the 11th largest city in the country at the time and had three daily Newspapers!! These articles were gathered from microfilm of those newspapers kept at the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society. My Special Thanks to Patricia M. Virgil Director Of Library Services at the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society for her wonderful detective work. By digging through the past she has uncovered some wonderful "Dickens Treasures", enjoy!

(special note-these newspaper pieces have been transcribed by me.  You may notice that they contain some strange non existent words, weird phrases and other bizarre things-some of those are a result of the "artistic" reporters who wrote the pieces, part (maybe a big part) of  it is a result of my transcribing...sorry!)
